Winter Solstice 2019 and Your Weekly AstroYoga Forecast

The Winter Solstice is HERE

Last week was full of difficult transits. You may have read about it here, and I'm also guessing you could sense it in the air. The solstice this Sunday brings a welcome pause.

Even though the difficult transits through Capricorn are ongoing into 2020, now is a moment of calm amid the storm. The winter solstice is a moment to take a breath and remember that all things are temporary; journeys into darkness happen for a reason.

In an ancient Egyptian version of the Persephone myth, the goddess of springtime journeyed into the underworld not because she was coerced, but because she wanted to peer into the darkness. What she found there was simply a piece of herself, and she became the ruler of both darkness and light.

I love this myth because it's the perfect metaphor for the Solstice: a time of quiet darkness that allows you to journey deep within yourself.

The AstroYoga pose of the week opens the back of the chakras to receive nourishment during the Winter Solstice.

ASTRO YOGA TIP OF THE WEEK

Practice Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana)

To practice this pose:

1. Sit and extend your legs (knees may be bent if needed)
2. On an inhale extend your spine long
3. On an exhale tilt forward
4. Reach for the feet or legs
5. Remain here for several breaths

PRO TIP

During the solstice, ease into this posture instead of focusing on perfect alignment. Let the body release forward as you open the back chakras. Make space for more light!

My advice on how this asana connects with astrology is general. Your personal chart will offer more specific advice on what sorts of activities could fortify your best qualities and encourage growth where there’s unrealized potential.
